A march of two hundred, and a wild wind rising; we pitch camp where we stand. The blade goes back in its sheath, and there is no thread of thought to follow; strand by strand the bili pipe says what the heart feels.
Glosses—
zhè (the cudrania of the tune's title): a deciduous shrub or small tree, the bark gray-brown and set with long thorns, the leaves ovate, the flowers in rounded heads, the fruit globular. Its leaves can feed silkworms; the root bark is used in medicine;
bili: a wind instrument played by the nomadic peoples of the north, shaped like a horn, its sound mournful.
