Yue Jiang Yin: Eight Years

Yue Jiang Yin: Eight Years · Illustration

The clear river trickles with dreams of mortal dust—a cut silhouette. Coming and going, it mimics the nature of the mind. Disliking its brightness and cleanness, I sleep among the flowers and wake, and chant the springs and autumns.

Roaming Mount Lan, the ice-soul surges, heaven and man at their play. Old affairs laid one over another—so this is what came of it. Eight years of illness, an idle reflection turned upside down, and what is left is a soul scattered.

Glosses—

Trickles: to run down in drops;
Wake (xing): to reflect upon oneself, to come to awareness;
Heaven and man: heaven and man, the signs of the sky and the affairs of people;
Soul scattered: the soul coming apart and dispersing. It describes the extremes of grief, of joy, of terror, and the like.
