A Mortal Life, Born of One Thought · Stubborn and Foolish by Nature · 41 / 102

Peach-coloured lamp blown out, close by the door leaf — the heart's business standing all alone. The crystal curtain is about to come down; a chrysanthemum pin binds her hair, her steps light and full of grace; loose sheets of flowered notepaper send the wine's madness off.
I will not see my lord away; rouge-stained tears blur and spread the grief of parting. At the cold pond the horse is given water, a withered vine holds a dragonfly fast. Bitterly I pity the qin and the se gone mute; the gilt beast turns cold, and day is about to break.
Glosses—
The grief of parting: the thoughts and feelings of separation;
Watering the horse: to give a horse water to drink;
The gilt beast: an incense burner in the shape of a beast.
