Qian Qiu Sui · An Instant

Qian Qiu Sui · An Instant · Illustration

A soft coolness stirring — what an idle savour this is. The withered grass revives, casts off the crickets. Golden light streams through the last of the mist; we talk over the histories of romance. The histories of romance — before the languorous tune is finished, the Green Gate lies in ruin.

We ride until the cinnabar cliff stops us, gaze to the limit on the ranked mountains, and are drunk. Shoulder to shoulder, inside the new sun. The geese drop low to take the measure of the stranger; together we watch a thousand thousand years. A thousand thousand years — cloud unfurling, cloud furling, leaving no trace behind.

Glosses—

Revives: to wake again, to recover;
The last of the mist: the mist that remains;
Take the measure: to look over, to judge.
