Qiliang Fan: Weeping in the Snow

Qiliang Fan: Weeping in the Snow · Illustration

Bleak and bleak, cutting and cutting; the whirling wind roars, and dark wolves to left and right, seeing clear and full of doubt. Palms open, fingers stiff and straight, tears wet the bloodied armor, lips locked, eyes split wide. The spirit scatters and goes out; a hand's breadth away, a burning love becomes eternal night. The frozen clouds grieve; a thousand birds are gone from the sky; the empty snow is like dust and chaff.

Looking back to where the years went, breathing on cold hands, brows lowered, that one at my side. The ice-wheel shines as it always did; off to another country—what can be done with what is broken? I dream my way to the Lantern Festival: painted boats, lion dances, the heat of the lamp market. I fear that now, through ten thousand years and a thousand autumns, point by point it falls away.

Glosses—

Ming huo: clear discernment and doubt;
Fingers straight: the fingers cold and stiffened;
Frozen clouds: the dark clouds of deep winter;
Dust and chaff: a figure for what is slight and not worth regarding;
Ge nong: that person.
