Xiao Chong Shan · Early Summer · Illustration

Unbroken rain ploughs the earth into flowers and splashes the star jasmine; the tiled house brims with apricot and plum, and the orioles in the willows call in haste. The green conch of the hills drowns every word of the soft red world; looking for the joy in living, I along the threads of the wind.

Lazy waking steals my mornings and evenings; the thick clouds break up again, and the sickly look leaves my face. Hill color on hill color, half of it lost in haze; the plays on and sweeps away all right and wrong.

Glosses—

unbroken rain: rain that falls on and on without stopping;
plough-flowers: earth turned up into the shapes of flowers;
star jasmine: an evergreen woody climbing vine;
green conch: a figure for green hills;
soft red: the red dust, the mortal world;
mornings and evenings: dawn and dusk, from day to day;
thick clouds: heavy, densely layered cloud.
