· Weeping in the Snow

Qi Liang Fan · Weeping in the Snow · Illustration

Bleak and piercing, the whirlwind roars; dark wolves on either side watch, keen-eyed yet uncertain. Palms open, fingers frozen straight, tears wetting bloodied armor, lips stiff, eyes torn wide. The spirit scatters and goes out; a hand's breadth away, a burning love turns to endless night. Frozen clouds brood; a thousand birds have flown, and none remain; the empty snow is dust and chaff.

Looking back to where the years went: breathing on cold hands, eyes lowered, that one at my side. The shines as it always did; gone to a far country—what can be done, now that all is broken? I dream of the : painted boats, lion dances, the lantern market bustling. I fear that now, through ten thousand years and a thousand autumns, it all withers away, bit by bit.

Glosses—

Míng huò: clear discernment and doubt;
Fingers straight: the fingers cold and stiffened;
Frozen clouds: the dark clouds of deep winter;
Dust and chaff: a figure for what is slight and not worth regarding;
Gè nóng: that person.
