Beacon fires, linked in a chain, break the rules of the age; body ground to dust, bones broken, he lays the foundation of the state. A hundred days besieged, and not the least afraid — straight at them — he roots out traitors and flatterers to keep the capital safe.

Since ancient times, once the work is done it is hard to step down — one aim only: better to break than bend, measured against a grand design. Loyal and righteous both, he is given back to the histories that follow — the great departure — and gain and loss, in life and after, count for little.

Glosses—

Foundation of the state: the root and base of the country;
The great departure: to die for one's country.
