Ode to Death

Ode to Death · Illustration

One dayI will dieyou will die

Yeswe will all die

Scattering into afterglowfalling into stillnessvanishing at last

The star-rings join head to tailcurves and straight lines interweavethe soul comes running out

Look therestars turned into grains of dustwandering in the void—their track

Countless living things are weepingwailing as they leave civilizationsoftly chanting the absurd—chronicle

In the darkness of the polar nightin the prayer of dawnin the false peacewe are all in…searching through the fog of illusionfor a thread of undying life

All love and hate will dissolveall joy and sorrow will go blankif you can cross over life and deaththen you can find yourselfknowing the endwhy fear the beginningmake way—the spirit scattered, the soul flown

May it be with a human-like mind undiminished through the years that I return to the world
